Paul declares in Galatians 5:22-23 that the [singular] fruit (a) of the Spirit is Unconditional-Love.” But then Paul lists 8 other nouns without any punctuation! Paul often leaves conjunctions out to make his letters shorter because he can be very wordy like the expert of the Jewish Law he is! Here he uses adjectival-nouns to simply further describe agape Unconditional-Love, using many of the same words he does elsewhere, but especially in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. The essence/nature of God and His Spirit is NOT known by 9 different fruits but 1 fruit with 8 ‘flavors,’ just as my Pink Grapefruit tree is different than my Yellow Grapefruit tree. In Greek, the word order shows sort of emphasis, at least in Paul’s mind: Incredible joy, a sea of tranquil, restful-peace, God’s boundless patience, infinite kindness and true goodness, completely-loyal fullness of faith, feather-like gentleness, and sovereign self-control/mastery over everything. God’s Unconditional-Love is first expressed by incredible joy! <Notes> a) karpos as essence or nature: “for ek out-of the [singular] fruit, the tree is experientially ginosko known” per Matthew 12:33, “for each tree out of its own fruit is experientially ginosko known” per Luke 6:44.
I’ve added the extra descriptions above from my extensive studies on these subjects and personal experience, especially to bring out the fullness or limitless of each of these ‘flavors’ of “The Singular Fruit of Unconditional-Love.” God is unlimited and so would be His essence/nature and its description! But notice the prominence of this incredible joy! He also showed me that each was like a different ‘facet’ of a single diamond, each reflecting a different color, but the essence/nature of God is simply Unconditional-Love period, as John said in 1 John 4:8, 16.
The NT Greek word for “joy” is chara, which means “the joyful awareness/recognition of God’s charis grace as the ‘unmerited, unearned, unconditional-loving favor’ of God, thus “joy because of grace.” The verb form chairo means “to actively rejoice or passively become joyful/delightful because of the experience of God’s grace.” Once again, our English bibles totally obscure that connection between grace and joy, when in the Greek the latter is the experience of the former! See Bible Info for more problems with English bibles.
Jesus lectures His disciples about remaining in the Vine of Christ to produce much fruit for God and warns them that if they disconnect from Him they won’t produce any fruit and the world will trample them and cast them into fiery trials. By remaining in Him they will have great enabling-power in proseuche conversational-prayer (a). Obeying Christ’s only 2 commandments of trusting-relying-faith in Him and unconditional-loving others keeps them in Christ’s unconditional-love. This is a lot to swallow and most likely scared them, but Jesus says: “I have told you these things so that My Joy may be in you and your joy may be complete” (b). Before His trial, in John 17:13, Christ says, “Now I am coming to You [Father], but these things (Christ’s promises) I speak here in this world so that they may have My Joy pleroo completely-filled within themselves.” This is all about the joy of the promised Spirit of Christ that was coming! Even as Christ’s disciples were depressed at just the talk of Him departing, Jesus promised that after their mourning/fasting (natural after a death of a loved one, and a very Jewish tradition) their sadness would be turned into joy, predicting His resurrection (c). <Notes> a) John 16:24, b) John 15:1-11, c) John 16:20.
That’s exactly what we find in Galatians 5:22-23 above! The preaching of the Great News is supposed to bring great joy (a) – the joy of God’s Unconditional-Love! There was to be a “joy in The-Trusting-Relying-Faith” of Christianity (b). God is the one who “pleroo ‘fill us to completion’ with pas all-of-a-kind-of joy and peaceful-rest in/by/with the having of trusting-relying-faith” (c). The kingdom of heaven was to be like a hidden treasure that when found would bring great joy (d). After persecution by the Jews, Paul was “pleroo filled-to-completion of/belonging-to joy and/coupled of/belonging-to [singular] Holy Spirit” (e). “For the kingdom of God isn’t a matter of food and drink (f) but instead of righteousness, peaceful-rest, and/coupled joy by-the-means-of the Holy Spirit” (g). Paul proseuchomai conversationally-prays that: “God may fill to completion you with all joy and peaceful-rest in/by/with having trusting-relying-faith, so that by-the-means-of the enabling-power of/belonging-to the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (h). <Notes> a) Luke 2:10, b) Philippians 1:25, c) Romans 15:13, d) Matthew 13:44, e) Acts 13:52, f) OT dietary laws, g) Romans 14:17, h) Romans 15:13.
Again Paul never ceases to proseuchomai conversationally-pray for Christians to “be pleroo filled-to-completion in/by/with the genuine, experiential, relational epignosis knowledge of God’s will by-the-means-of pas all-of-a-kind-of Spirit-kind-of sophia wisdom and/coupled [Spirit-kind-of] sunesis connect-the-dots understanding (a) to walk (b) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, routinely bearing fruit in every good work and/coupled routinely increasing in the genuine, experiential, relational epignosis knowledge of God, routinely being strengthened by-the-means-of pas all-of-a-kind-of enabling-power down-from/according-to His glorious manifested kratos might toward/reaching pas all-of-a-kind-of endurance and/coupled patience meta changed-with joy, giving thanks to the Father” (c). The Holy Spirit is the source of so much! <Notes> a) notice that Paul had to qualify these terms that are often used derogatorily of the natural human-kind-of version of each, b) this is only possibly if you meet those conditions, c) Colossians 1:9-12.
Peter says of these Jewish-Christians: “Though you have not gazed/stared at Christ, you actually, ongoingly unconditionally-love Him. Though you do NOT-in-possibility presently gaze/stare at Him, you habitually are having trusting-relying-faith in Him and/moreover are ongoingly jumping for joy (a) by the means of inexpressible joy and/coupled already [with ongoing results] been made glorious, presently/ongoing obtaining the outcome/end-goal of The-Trusting-Relying-Faith [of Christianity], the salvation (b) of your souls (c)” (d). Yet, when we get to heaven, we will fully enter the joy of our Master (e). Paul was thanking God for this church because of their “work of/belonging-to trusting-relying-faith and labor of/belonging-to unconditional-love . . . that they received the gospel logos message in much affliction with the chara joy (g) of/belonging-to the Holy Spirit” (f). <Notes> a) agalliao, b) soteria: deliverance, mending back together what is torn, reconciliation, restoration, health, wholeness, c) psyche: mind, emotions, will – see Identity, d) 1 Peter 1:8-9, e) Matthew 25:21, 23, f) 1 Thessalonians 1:2-6.
James 1:2 strongly urges Christians to “Count it all chara joy (a) when you fall into various trials.” This doesn’t mean: “When you encounter trials, consider EVERY ONE of these trials as a ENTIRELY joyful experience.” That is pure denial and a lie! It means to “call up joy [as a quantity distributed or portioned] throughout the various types of trials that happen to you.” This isn’t a “fleshly” activity, but going to the Lord of unconditionally-loving-favor-of-grace and becoming aware of this unconditionally-loving-favor-of-grace, surrendering control to THIS until that joy from unconditionally-loving-favor-of-grace finally comes! <Notes> a) awareness of charis unconditionally-loving-favor-of-grace.
