Father Drum Role-Guidelines - Spirit Music Meet-Ups

Role 1 – Father Drum Guidelines: 

 

 

Video:  Pulsation – Dead-sticking & Hand-muting for quieter Muted tones v. Louder Open Tones, pitch-bending

 

Video:  Pulsation – Watch the Mother Drum to Support or Embellish their Low tones & Forward motions.  Clap/play on rims/shells/sticks on the higher tones & Back motions

 

Video:  Put it all together into a Groove.  Mother Drums groove off of this.  Add end-of-phrase Buildups toward the Downbeat

 

Video:  Add high claps for showmanship. Not too many big buildups to the climax/resolution or use mini-buildups.  Mother Drums play off this.  Summary of the Father Drum

 

Video: Drum-Beat improvisation:  Bass-Drum matches your singing of the low sounds & vibrations in the music

Role 2 – Steady Time-Keepers Guidelines:

 

 

Use Timing Tools to improve your timing

 

Video:  Metal bells & Wood claves/blocks. Greater Tonal separation/contrast, cutting through to help the band’s temp.  Muting vs. Open tones.  Add motion, add more backwards motion

 

Video:  Shaker/Maraca – steady beats & subdivisions, accent backbeats, swaying motions, simple buildup. Jingle/Tambourine – same or just the backbeats

 

Video:  Jingle/Tambourine – wiggling it, accent backbeats, buildup if ¼ or 1/8 hits, roll it.  Guiro/Rasp – long & short scrapes

Video:  A Groove that combines elements of Father pulsation, Child syncopation, and Time-Keepers.  Add Slap Tones or claps.  Add buildups & accents.  Many tones.

 

Video:  Hand-drum Open & Muted tones.  Adding body motions.  Heel-toe floating hands or rolls
