Drum Rudiments are “building blocks” of various foot/hand/sticking patterns used to build Technique & Stick-Control given various rhythmic notations and countings to create a fundamental “vocabulary” for the drummer to “master” and then build on. The are so important because they can be applied to everything in drumming!

Simple-strokes:

Single-strokes – Alternating Simple-strokes

3-8 Multiple-strokes & Combos – Video Part 1 and Part 2
Compound Strokes created by a Principle-stroke with either grace-note Setup-strokes preceding it or Echo-strokes trailing it:
– all of these can be expanded to become Simple-strokes as above –
Flams – 1 Setup + 1 Principle, optionally with other strokes above
Drags – 2 same-hand Setups + 1 Principle, optionally with other strokes above
Ruffs – 2 or more non-same-hand Setups + 1 Principle, optionally with other strokes above
Multiple-Bounce Strokes or Buzzes – 1 Principle + unspecified number of Echoes, optionally with other strokes above
